Took my shoes for a run.

I wish I had more days like today, blue skies, mild temperature's, endless vistas. With an unknown destination I set out above Elfin Lakes to see where I would end up. It was 11km on a well used trail up to the two very beautiful mountain lakes to start with. It's quite isolated, I saw one party on their way down around RedHeather hut, other than that it was a pretty quiet mid week in the backcountry. The feeling I get with solitude and mountains is very spiritual, indescribable sometimes?
I am alive in the backcountry, searing lungs and heavy breathing, quivering quads and aching feet. My mind is happy, my spirit free. In pursuit of this feeling I will always have.
I finished up back at my car 6 and a half hours later and just shy of 50km. Happy am I!!

Must get out and run more, feeling like a lazy sloth lately? wtf??
Wanting to go out and get lost in the mountains, just pack light, alpine style and see how far I can go in a day. Must do! Must get my adventurous spirit back.

Skull capped

You are a dumbass!
You drove your little convertible piece of shit too fast and you lost control...and now you lost the top of your head. Luckily my stomach contents stayed put but it was touch and go for awhile, just like your life.
In the end though only one of us lost.

And my wife wonders why I'm a little weird

It's where I learned the meaning and mindset of pushing myself. The only limits we have are the ones we put on ourselves. The only competition I have is with my brain.

Snakes and Ladders

Personally I think running some of the North Shore trails are the technically most difficult trails you will see anywhere. Rocks and roots, ups and downs, it's amazing trail running terrain.
The following picture is from Mt Seymour in Vancouver's north shore mountains...a trail runners paradise!

Humbled

I was out for some hill training the other day, climbing Grouse Mtn via the BCMC(starting from Cleveland Dam), I was nearing the 3/4 mark of this steep climb when I came upon this wonderful old gentleman. Vintage gear, steady pace heart full of zest and adventure, wow how wonderful! how impressive!! how humbling!!
He was 85, has always had the love for being in the mountains and an adventurous spirit. We had just a quick chat, I could tell he was not a man full of useless banter. I can only hope I will be like this when I'm 85.

Forward momentum and a PB&J

I run...I don't 'jog'..sorry I'm not trying to be a snob or anything, it's just I don't like the term 'jogging'. For me jogging is something that is done half heartedly. When I go running, it's just that, 'running'. I am thinking, training, adjusting, relaxing, absorbing, working, I am there for a purpose, to run and feel alive in my body and spirit.
And what do I enjoy most after a long run... a PB&J sandwich!! It seems to be a staple in my diet. Since childhood it has been my comfort food. I think it was the most common sandwich I asked for whilst in school, and I never got bored of it. That has carried onto my adult life and now I regularly pack a PB&J for work.
I love you PB&J!!

Honour roll please!!

My crazy step-gurl had a little ceremony the other night, she made the Honour Roll in only her 2nd year of Canadian Highschool!
So proud of her. Despite black toenails from running and bruises from field hockey she cleaned up pretty nice I'd say.
Love you Maggie

Don't loose your wheel

"I was just drivin' and I tried to stop and I had no brakes!"
...that's because your wheel was not attached to the truck!

100k

After a longish day I can happily pose with my cutie pie girls Maggie and Madeleine.
Just over 12 hours of running to finish this 100km trail race on Vancouver Island. Overall I can say I had a good race..I finished of course and that in itself at these distances is an accomplishment.
0-30km was so so, just tried to set a good pace and get into a rhythm. 30-50 wanted to quit, knee pain. 50-80 zoned out and plodded along. 80-100km I was enjoying the moment and actually felt good.
I was happy to have my wife and girls with me, my loyal support crew as always. I hope my next 100 race has more hills though as I enjoy the elevation changes through the race. This race was a 10km loop and tended to get boring after about 50k. As always though I'm just happy to run and the feeling I get from pushing myself is wonderful. The 'passion' of running takes me to new heights of self transcendence. Thank you running!

Road trip

Just finished a 6 day 2,200km road trip through Washington and Oregon State. Beautiful sights, great weather and a failing car that didn't fail...bliss.
Three nights we slept in our tent, one night we crashed in the back of the station wagon and one night we stayed at a run down stinky hotel(should have slept in the car). Leavenworth, Yakima, Mt Hood, Portland, Cannon Beach and the Oregon coast, it was all very interesting and great to see. Meifeng was nails as always, happy to just sleep in the car, cook up some boring noodles on the cooker and carry on. We managed our morning coffee at Starbucks and a bit of wifi time and then onto a different day of discovery, hikes, walks, strolls off the beaten path.
We saw a lot of beautiful sights and we made some memories together, love on the road...

Hand in Hand

We walk this road together, hand in hand. And though our paths may separate. And though times may become harsh. I will always be here. Walking hand in hand with you until the very end. I will never abandon you. I will never let you go. I will be here forever. Waiting and hoping. Let's walk together.

It's a steady progression..upping the distance in my running. Was feeling some nagging knee pain for the last 30min??
But am I ready for 100 km? I guess we will see.

Vegas....meh!

'Sin City', should be renamed 'Ripoff City'. Everything is overpriced, the hotels steer you where they want you to go, hidden fees, ect ect...
My Starbucks coffee, a tall Pike is usually $1.74 in Vancouver, Vegas price...$3.50, and you can't even get a refill(even though they take registered Starbucks cards). Pastries were double the price, and the bastards even charged me for a cup of hot water. They rang it up as 'ice water' and then charged me a shitty $1.00 for it!
It was nearly impossible to get their wifi also. RIPOFF!!
Our hotel was Bally's. It's best days are long gong. Although its centrally located on the strip the hotel doesn't have much going for it. A smoke filled casino, so so rooms(no ability to be self sufficient with no tea kettle, no mini fridge, no kitchen things), and an extra $15 per night for a 'resort fee'. The resort fee is for use off the hotel gym and wifi for ONE device in the room...RIPOFF!!
Basically we did a couple long winded strolls down the main drag, took in some of the free shows, then decided to rent a car so we could get outta town for a bit. We took off for Red Rock Canyon for a day, which was nice cause I got out for a little trail run, and then we went to Hoover Dam and Las Vegas Chinatown for another day.
I got some small runs in, but mostly R&R'd it for the trip. The girls enjoyed it mostly because it was a 'different' place, but I think we all would have been happier if we went camping or hiking somewhere not so 'over the top'.
Las Vegas is great if your into choosing amongst ten thousand over priced restaurants to eat from, smoke filled cheesy casinos, crowded sidewalks going to nowhere, stag and stagget parties, and dodging morbidly obese fat Americans. For us it wasn't a great idea for a holiday.
Vegas...meh...

Off to Sin City

Vegas baby..that's what I'm talkin bout!
It's been years for me, since I've been to this over the top neon city of debauchery. For my wife and her daughter I think it will be a 'trip' they could never have imagined.
First we have to make it to Seattle.
After my relentless night shift I came home, packed up my bags and woke up the girls, then off we went walking with backpacks strapped on and got a bus to the skytrain, then skytrain to the city centre bus station. As I write we're fueling up with a Starbucks coffee and waiting for the coach bust to take us to downtown Seattle. Tomorrow we fly to Las Vegas!!

Smarties

Trouble afoot. Runners have ugly feet, calluses, blisters, black toe nails, just a few of the main culprits. What better way to cover those black toenails than to have your 8 year old daughter paint them up smarty style.
She was happy, I let her pic the colours out, we sat out on the back balcony on a beautiful spring day and she went to town on my lower digits.
We don't have to live with this curse, brighten those bad boys up, put some colour on down there. Black toenails no more, for me...or at least until I stop ultra running.

About a month to go and then I get my feet wet with a 100k race. I'm not ready, I know I'm not...I will suffer and it will hurt. I will question why I run long distances and I will bask in my mental rainbow of pleasure and pain.

A busy day

Woke at 5:20am to do a longish morning run, it was 3 hrs of hell. For one I hate morning runs and for two, the day previous I did a full on leg workout along with another 13km, my legs felt like cinder blocks. I got 22km in which totally sucks.

Then we rushed off to day trip on Bowen Island.
What a great little escape from the city, and it's only 20 min by the Ferry. A few quaint shops littler the small but hilly islands population of 4000 tree huggers. We walked up to the Artisian area and had a great lunch in a Deli shop. After lunch we just strolled around, relaxing, walking and talking.
Upon getting home Helen wanted to go for a run to see the sunset off Iona Pier strip, so another 10 was added into my day for a total distance of 32 km for the day.
It was a great day, so happy to be with the ones I love ...and my legs are tired.

Mountain

My escape, my solace, my happiness.

I truly believe that once you experience the beauty of the mountain it will never leave you. Big open miles of sky, brilliant sunrises, jaw dropping sunsets. A cathedral of beauty, deathly private, welcoming to all, the mountain is my religion.
Time to explore, not only the mountain but ME! Finding inner peace and simplicity.
Take me too the mountain...

Signed up!

I need a qualifier for a race I really want to do next year. My qualifier needs to be either two 50mile races or a 100km race. I chose the 100km distance. I'm not a huge person for racing or competition, my competition is always within myself, my brain against my body, battling a love hate relationship with the trail, mountain, elements. I do like to see how I measure up against others and I do and have had a lot of great experiences at different types of races. From triathlon(sprint, Olympic, ironman)marathons, open water swim races, mountain bike racing, road racing. Trail running races are by far the most fun for me. Thus this is what I have pursued for the last couple years.
My big race for 2014 is 'Ultra Trail Mt Fuji'. A 100 mile circumnavigation of one of the most iconic mountains anywhere in this world. I have not run a 100 mile race before, I have wanted to knock this distance off for quite some time, in 2014 it WILL happen, in Japan.
In order to compete in a race such as this you don't and can't just sign up. You have to prove that your capable of being allowed in a race like this. It's not for the newbie, it's not for the OCD bucket list gym fanatic. It's for the person who has payed his dues, respects the mountain and trails, who wants to truly see what his body and mind can do, and it's for the person who has a passion for running.
Running is a passion that I have always had, it's true forward momentum of just you and your body, no mechanized machinery to fail and let you down, no skis that you need skills to operate, no device to put on your feet or in your hands, just you, your body and your will power to keep going.
I will compete in the Elk Lake 100km trail running ultra in early May. I have a lot of work to do. I have a good base but I really need to extend that long run. Time on feet is what I need to work at, running on tired legs, going when the tank is empty. I hope to work on this aspect over the next two months.
Tomorrow I'm off to the north shore to get a long hilly run in, hopefully I can get a solid 4-5 hours on the Baden Powell trail. I will follow this up with a recovery bike ride the day after and another longish run on Friday...Saturday is back to work for my four days.
I guess I should go get my shit together for tomorrow then...

Emilia

Raped at the age of ten, a life full of depression and self harm since then, you let me step into your life but for a moment last night. Scarred beyond your years but at twenty-one your still but a child. May your journey forward be graced with peace and sanctity.

Thank God I'm Canadian!

Happy to be CANADIAN, yes I am!
Although I have many American friends(and even some relatives), I gotta say..."America..your "FU*KING CRAZY"
Most people are a little bit crazy. Americans are simply a splendid example. Well, I shouldn't say it that way because it significantly understates the case. Americans are an outstanding example of human craziness.
You might even say Americans are the absolute pinnacle of human craziness, the "greatest" achievement of our species.
Americans LOVE guns, www.pinkgun hey it's their constitutional right to bear an arsenal of high powered automatic weapons to blow the shit outta somebody that may knock on their door after midnight. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the Right of the People to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”  1791 folks..time for an update!! Maybe that's why there were more than 11,000 murder's in the US last year. That's why if there is going to be a 'massacre' anywhere in the world it will probable be in the US (ie: 20 children killed in Newton Conn, Oregon shopping mall, Colorado movie theatre..ect..ect..) The US has the highest gun ownership in the world, 90 guns per 100 people..
In America you can get a gun easier than you can get health care, walk into a Walmart and pick one up next to the diaper section...that shit is just crazzzzy! There are about 300 million guns floating around the good ol' US of A, I don't think these are all hunting guns?
In America if you have the "small man penis syndrome" you don't need to buy a Harley motor bike, or a Porche convertible, you get your small penis an AR 15 !!!

You buy a gun because you're threatened that 'they're' going to deny you one. It makes perfect sense to me, too. Whenever any government bans a book or a movie, I buy it immediately, on principle. It's my right. "If I want to have a gun that blats off more than a thousand bullets in a few seconds, why shouldn't I??"   HUH!! America...NRA... pull your ignorant backwards head out of your ass.
One interesting case is the defeat of crack cocaine, which has slowly disappeared from urban America. Not because of the tens of billions of dollars spent on the war on drugs, which has resulted only in drugs becoming cheaper and more accessible than ever. But because it became clear that smoking crack was the same as committing suicide. Crack evolved from a sign of pleasure to one of death. The same transformation may well happen with assault weapons.
A country should not be judged by how great it is, but how great the majority of its individuals are.
Why be surprised when the rest of the planet regards the USA as an out of control rogue nation?
Plainly, Yanks love guns more than children. Or their cultural paranoia is greater than their care for their children. Either way, the USA is a nation not yet civilised.  Americans are the only Western nation without public health care for goodness sake.
A country should not be judged by how great it is, but how great the majority of its individuals are. And there are a lot of countries out there doing it a lot better than America.
Thank God I'm Canadian!

My first patient today was a nice gentleman who stormed the beaches of Normandy..when he was just 18 years old. You just sometimes never know who your going to meet on any given day. A lot of Paramedic's don't enjoy the geriatric calls, and I must say that it gets a tad boring doing these myself, however I always take the time to ask some unrelated questions from their medical history, like "what did you do in your younger days" , "where did you grow up".
I've met some pretty interesting characters in my time with the ambulance service, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, a lady who worked for Churchill decoding secret messages from the Nazi party, a guy who ran from the east coast of Canada to the west coast...too many to remember. It's a joy meeting different people and learning 'their story'.

I feel I am getting a bit fitter, slowly building up my running endurance, 3-4 hours of solid trail running is feeling good. I would like to get up to about 6 hours of continous running ability, then i will able to add some long walk/run trips into the mountains with some good climbs and descents. I feel my mental strength is there, I just need to get the legs turning over. My feet have plagued me with a variety of issues, if I could get them 100% then I know could perform a lot better. Keep givin'er!!

24 hour virus is..

...a great weight loss program. Pressurized vomit and diarrhea, awesome!
I hadn't been that sick in a while, it was quick and intense and just as quickly as it came it left.
The wife was awesome, she provided me with lots of 'Chinese' medicine, TLC and wifely support.
Feeling better tonight, came in for my night shift, we'll see if I can stay away from the toilet tonight!

Week in review

Did a couple trail runs, couple indoor trainer sessions on the bicycle, some strength and cardio workouts. Feeling good throughout the week, my longer run this week was 3 hours, which went well, I drank too much coffee the morning of, and then had to pee about every 30 minutes. Side note about peeing and racing. Sure when you are training and you need to pee you just pull off the trail a bit and then go do you business. But when I am in a competition I will pee on the run..in my shorts..on myself.....no problem. Taking a dump is another matter.
The wife and I argue about stupid shit, usually something difficult to translate or make her understand. She gets frustrated and pissed off and then we laugh it off. She IS a crazy Chinese mofo though! She's a very feisty little thing, all 5 foot 2 inch 96lbs of her. She is awesome though and I love her to bits, I cannot think of my life without her.
Work has been good, I did my ITLS course(international trauma life support) and got all my required CME credits for the year. The licensing requirements are always a hassle every year but I guess it is good to make a standard requirement for Paramedics.
Helen and I went to Maggie's Highschool open house. Helen cannot believe all the things a western highschool offers, music, arts, cooking, theatre, sports, dance, trades, and such like. She never had any of that, Maggie never had any of that either...her schooling and education is drastically different then what she would have if she were still in China. However the biggest difference would be the way of learning. The school of thought in the West is totally different than how Chinese students learn, TOTALLY!!!
I'll explain more about the schooling system a little later, right now my thumb is getting tired from typing this up on my iPhone :/
Here are a few pictures from the week that was...
running, skating thingy at the Olympic Oval, ITLS gear, Vancouver General heli pad.

Friday, January 25, 2013

Beautiful day today, blue skies and a cool breeze, it's just nice to not go out in the rain again. Went for a nice one hour trail run, picked up the pace and added a couple 5 minute 'pick-ups' into my run, felt good. Getting home I immediatly got on the indoor trainer and did a one hour spin on the bike, sweated it out in my self made sweat suit(trying to drop a few pounds..damn chocolate)
Working ot tonight, kinda wanted to stay home with the wife tonight but the lure of money has me by the balls...no sorry that's 'my mortgage' has me by the balls. Can't ever seem to get ahead!!
Went back to the hospital where we took the head injury guy from my last post, the nurse told me he had a cardiac arrest, but is now somewhat 'stable' up in ICU.
So far tonight it has been an 18 year old who passed out on the bus after drinking a 'yager' and snorting oxycontin(didnt know that they snorted oxy??), he was depressed and wanted to kill himself. Then there was the light weight 25 year old male who witnessed his friend getting hit in the head when a bed frame fell on his head and some blood squirted out. When he saw the blood he fainted, awoke with heart palpitations...wanted to go to the hospital. "Ok, get in".. the red and white taxi is here...

Last night shift

Day 4
Last night shift of this block. I had anticipated it being a busy night, i dont know why just something I felt...and it didn't disappoint. We started out with the enclosed picture. This is what happens when you fall backwards totally shit faced and drive a metal fireplace poker rod into the back of your head. He had an open basal skull fracture and what seemed like an arterial bleed, it was pouring out like a fountain and was very difficult to control the bleeding. Even with multiple trauma dressings and constant pressure it still wouldn't stop flowing. We managed to get him into C-spine immobilization (the yellow plastic thing with all the blood on it is called a 'clamshell' and we use it to scoop up potential spinal injury patients) and whisked him off to the hospital. Outcome ?
The rest of the night was filled with an assortment of other calls, a profound short of breath asthmatic, an OD crack addict, a "my tummy hurts"...the usual suspects.
A rather gruesome call took place last night but not in our area. A young man was decapitated at the hands of a samurai sword, crazy shit!
I've just arrived home, stay up and go for a coffee ? Or crash in bed for a few hours and wake up feeling like a bag of shit? hmmm...COFFEE!!!

Two in a row.

My two last shifts I've had two cardiac arrests. Yesterday's was 'asystole' on arrival, he was a young-ish 57 year old male, still warm, no cardiac history, got on scene in less than 5 minutes(no bystander CPR though). We worked it for awhile but never got anything back.
The other arrest was a 'witnessed' arrest(by us). Originally it came in as possibly diabetic issues, right away we knew he was sick, we called for ALS(Advance Life Support), did some immediate procedures as his level of consciousness was decreased. He was awake and answering our questions somewhat and as soon as we went to move him he went into cardiac arrest. Down onto the hard floor we put him and we began CPR, i vividly remember my first three compressions on his chest I could feel his ribs breaking under the weight of my hands, the AED was on but no advisable shocks. ALS soon arrived, patient was intubated and drugs pushed, we worked it for almost 45 minutes. We had him...we lost him...we had him...we lost him. Three times he re arrested, balancing the fence post not knowing if he was going this side or that side. Finally we got him stabilized, loaded up and transported to the hospital. His outlook was not great but we did the best we could do. It was still amazing though witnessing somebody go into cardiac arrest right before your eyes. The wonderment of life...

Happiness

Pacific Spirit Park, one of my favourite places to run. 750 hectares of beautiful forested trails shared amongst runners, dog walkers, cyclists and horseback riders. It's great for year round running, has some hills for repeats, not much for technical rocks and roots but great aesthetic trails nonetheless. I have been coming here for years as it's great for dog walks and getting in a longer run with variety that I can't do near home. It's still only a 15 minute drive from home so I can't complain. Yesterdays run was about 3 hours, did about 700 m of elevation gain, nothing huge but it was just a nice fun run. My half way point was Locarno Beach where it over looks North and West Vancouver and views into downtown. I felt good, didn't go crazy and kept about a 6min/km pace for the 3 hours. Had a good stretch post run and best of all a nice massage from my wife that night :)

How I like to start my shift

With the tap of a finger my phone alarm is turned off, 5:30am. Getting motivation to unwrap myself from my warm cozy bed and untangle my wifes limbs intertwined on my body is a colossal achievement. Riding gear on, downstairs for a bowl of cereal and out the door at 5:55. -4C was a slap in the face, but once I got going I soon warmed up. Alot of black ice coated the quiet roads, just me and my bike. I can truely say I dislike getting out to ride to work, but once I'm out and then having arrived, it's self pleasing and I'm actually very happy I rode.
Get to work, shower, get dressed into my uniform, go over the ambulance, sign into the CAD system..the usual routine. Sunday mornings are sometimes the only 'slow-ish' day of the week, most often it's get into the car at 6:30 am and your gone for a full 12 hours or more. Sunday mornings is the time to go to Starbucks and have that morning cup of coffee. So..that's what we did....and it was so good! However it didn't last long, it never does.
Post coffee it was an assortment of 'routine' and 'code 3' calls, the least appealing was the "my blood pressure is too high" (172/88) " I checked on the internet and I could be having a stroke!"...to the two middle aged guys who lost control of their car at 100km and struck a concrete light standard. The engine comparment was pushed back about a foot, the roof was crumpled, windshield was shattered. Neither were wearing their seatbelts! Seriously? Seriously!...what f^@king idiot doesn't wear their seat belt this day and age?? Anyways we had to call for another ambulance and we rushed them off to hospital with multi system trauma.
Wear your seat belt, get off the phone, put your face on before you get in the car(girls), look at the map or plug it into the GPS before you leave(guys), put your brain on and friggin concentrate on driving. If people were as concerned about driving as they were about their 'fb status update' the streets would be a safer place.
I think I need another coffee!

Saturday, January 12, 2013

Back to a new 'block' of work(4 days of work). It is Saturday and the sun is out. It was a crisp -2C on my way to work, luckily the Starbucks was open and it took the chill off. My days off were good, I was hoping to pick up some overtime  but low there was no call. We are planning a big trip to China this summer and I need to bank some time for holidays. I am aiming for 4 weeks with the girls, Helen is going early and probably staying later by up to one month either way so that she can visit more family and just relax with her old friends.
Did a couple trail runs, some indoor trainer riding, some cardio and strength training and am also staying true my new habit of consistant stretching. I'm thinking of getting back into Bikrams yoga, my hips are as tight as an elastic and I remember the hot yoga worked wonders. Plus I sweated up a shit storm in there! I have my indoor bike trainer set up on the treadmill so that I can zone out and watch movies on the iPad, it works wonders for passing an hour by. I will be happy though to get both my mountain bike out on the trails and get some road riding in.
The wife gave me an hour long massage last night before going to bed..so awesome. I had some tired legs so it felt so good. I gots me the best wife eva!!

I have...

....athletes foot!
Itching, scratching, redness, feet on fire, wanna cut my foot off. Just another on my list of foot/running problems. Black dying toe nails, blisters, stress fractures, sprains and 8 years of plantar fasciitis have plagued me...and that's just my feet.
As runners and especially as ultra distance runners our bodies get hammered. Add on age and it's a recipe for divine destruction.
I did many torturous years as a British Commando, carrying 100+ lbs of weight on my back, my feet transporting me for weeks and months, slogging it over mountains, in the Arctic, jungle, desert and urban environments, jumping over, around and immersed into ankle destructive terrain. Days on end of not being able to see my rotting giblets in wet sodden military boots, but yet not one injury.
Athletes fungal foot has me whimpering like a little baby, I'm such a light weight now. So sad.
Anybody have any good home remedies for athletes foot? (before I drop coin at the pharmacy)

2013

A new year in store. What challenges will we go through....health, financial, family, friendship, mental well being?
For me my list is pretty basic of what I want to do for 2013, who I want to be and what I would like to achieve. I do not make New Years resolutions!! I think that if you need New Years to jump on the band wagon to fix a bad habit, get in shape or make a 'better me' your doing it for all the wrong reasons. We should all be making daily choices that are 'pro'. Be pro choice in your decision making, make a difference in your life and even more importantly in somebody else's life. Give back, improve, grow and get strong in body and spirit. Learn, achieve, set goals, get out of that comfortable box, do something crazy.
What will 2013 hold for me? Who knows , I'm hoping for good health and happiness, a paycheque every 2 weeks, a family that I love(and loves me back), less hair, probably but hopefully not a little bit more fat, some yummy Chinese food, and a whole lot of fun and nasty trail runs.
Lets all make 2013 a great year, live it to the fullest...Happy New Year!!!
